Are most Americans in favour of expanding the goverment's role in the economy?

The trend seems to indicate that with Obama being elected,etc...To those of you in favour of it, why? Anyone who has a basic understanding of economics knows that more goverment interference in the economy=less prosperity. Personally, I don't like being told what to do. So the less freakin government in my life, the better...
