Is it normal to cry over the death of a person you didn't even know?

Last year in 7th grade a boy named Hunter died of the flu (not swine flu, regular flu). He was only 12 years old. He was never in any of my cles, so i never saw him. But i saw him around in the halls and stuff, although i never talked to him. I cry horribly when ever i hear or think about him. Is it normal for me to feel so sad about his death when i never even knew him?
